2023-2024 Events
2022-2023 Events
In March 2023, Del Val hosted its first Annual District Arts Festival post-COVID. Students from all 5 sending districts, Alexandria Middle School, Frenchtown Elementary School, Kingwood Township School, Holland Township School, and Milford Township School joined the choral students at Del Val on Thursday, March 24th to rehearse and then perform four combined pieces together: How Can I Keep From Singing arranged by Greg Gilpin, Obwisana (Goin' to Ghana) by Mary Donnelly, Give Us Hope by Jim Papoulis, and Jacob Narverud's Sisi Ni Moja. In addition to the collaboration between the four choral directors: Mr. Adrian Camano (Del Val), Ms. Theresa Travis (Alexandria), Ms. Peggy Button (Frenchtown), Ms. Gina Niedziejko (Kingwood and Milford), Del Val's Vox Blue and Vox Auri also gave performances. The concert was well attended and an overall great success!
In January 2023, 6 choral students, Lily Brunell ('24), Nickolas Burinsky ('23), Avery Fitz ('23), Mia Franzo ('24), Holden Hutchinson ('23), and Michaela Turton ('23) from Vox Auri and Vox Blue, Del Val's premier chamber ensemble, and competitive a cappella group, participated in the Central Jersey Music Educator's Association (CJMEA) Region II High School Mixed and Treble Choruses. Each of these choral members took part in live auditions in December against the best vocalists in the central region of NJ, and earned a spot in the choir. Nickolas Burinsky also achieved the best score out of all of the vocalists in his section.
These students spent many days intensively rehearsing for their performance on Sunday, January 29th, at Monroe High School. Lily Brunell and Michaela Turton performed in the CJMEA Region II High School Treble Chorus under the direction of Ms. Julianna LoBiondo, a doctoral student at the University of North Texas, and Nickolas Burinsky, Avery Fitz, Mia Franzo, and Holden Hutchinson performed in the CJMEA Region II High School Mixed Chorus under the direction of Dr. Andrew Kreckman, Director of Choral Activities at Sacramento State University in Sacramento, California. Congratulations to all of these students!
In December 2022, Del Val Choirs performed in the Annual Winter Concert. All five vocal ensembles, Concert Choir, Vox Auri, Terrier Tones, Treble in Paradise, and Vox Blue gave excellent performances and enjoyed singing their combined piece I Sing Because I'm Happy by Rollo Dilworth! Del Val Choirs also led the audience in singing Sleigh Ride by Leroy Anderson accompanied by Del Val's Concert Band. It was a spectacular night of music! A special thank you to our amazing piano accompanist, Stefanie Watson!
In November 2022, Del Val welcomed Mr. Anthony J. Rafaniello, Director of Choral Activities at Cranford High School, and Mr. Camano's former cooperating teacher to the Choir Room. Mr. Rafaniello or "Mr. Raf", as he is referred to by his students, worked with both curricular choirs, Concert Choir and Vox Auri, in preparation for their Annual Winter Concert. Suffice to say, Del Val students loved working with Mr. Raf and cannot wait for him to return!
In November 2022, 3 students, Lily Brunell ('24), Nickolas Burinsky ('23), and Holden Hutchinson ('23), from Vox Auri, Del Val's premier chamber ensemble, participated in the New Jersey Music Educator's Association (NJMEA) All State Mixed Chorus. Each of these choral members took part in virtual blind auditions last spring against the best vocalists in the state of NJ, and earned a spot in the choir.
These students, along with Mr. Camano, Director of Choral Activities at Del Val, spent two nights, Wednesday, November 9th to Friday November 11th in Atlantic City, intensively rehearsing for their first performance, during the New Jersey Educators' Association (NJEA) Conference on Friday, November 11th in the Adrian Phillips Ballroom at Jim Wheelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, NJ.
Under the direction of the incredible Dr. Amanda Quist, Director of Choral Activities at the University of Miami's Frost School of Music, the chorus performed repertoire spanning three different languages and various composers/arrangers, such as Bedřich Smetana, Elaine Hagenberg, Michael Barrett, Stacey V. Gibbs, Vicente Lusitano, Richard Smallwood, and a piece by Dr. Quist and her husband, Tim Brent. The repertoire performed by the chorus was in various languages, such as Czech, Latin, English, and Bantu.
The NJMEA All State Chorus performed alongside the All State Orchestra, and joined forces to conclude with a remarkable work by Joseph Martin entitled The Awakening, a piece that describes what a world would be like if there was no music, an appropriate piece given that this was the first NJMEA All State Chorus and Orchestra concert in person since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
In addition to their performance in Atlantic City, the Chorus and Orchestra gave their final performance at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark, NJ on Sunday, November 20th.
Nickolas Burinsky from Vox Auri, Del Val's premier chamber ensemble, participated in the The College of New Jersey's (TCNJ) Choral Honors Festival. This honor choir was made up of high school students from all over NJ that were specifically nominated by their choral directors. The honor choir rehearsed all day on Saturday, November 5th, under the direction of Dr. John Leonard, Director of Choral Activities, and Dr. Heather Mitchell, Assistant Director of Choral Activities at TCNJ, along with acclaimed pianist Ms. Stefanie Watson. Students also had the opportunity to work with renowned TCNJ artists, Adjunct Voice Faculty, Professor Mark Moliterno, and Coordinator of Vocal Studies, Professor Brandi Diggs in a masterclass setting. The ensemble rehearsed for a final time on Sunday, November 6th, before they showcased their work in TCNJ's beautiful Mildred and Ernest E. Mayo Concert Hall with a short but memorable concert. Choral pieces sung included No Time, arranged by Susan Brumfield, Excerpts from Mozart's Requiem: Dies Irae and Lacrymosa, O Schöne Nacht by Johannes Brahms, and I Sing Because I'm Happy by Rollo Dilworth.
On October, 9 students from Vox Auri, Del Val's premier chamber ensemble, participated in a workshop with Dr. Rollo Dilworth, renowned choral composer and professor of music education, at Old Greenwich Church. In addition to Del Val, students from Philipsburg High School, a high school in Maryland, and members of the Old Greenwich Choir participated in the workshop.
