• Just Words

This year we will be using the Wilson Just Words program in our classroom. This program is one of three curriculums used at KTS to provide reading support and language development through a concentrated word study of the English language. The three reading curriculums include Fundations, Just Words, and the Wilson Reading System, which are used to help students with the encoding and decoding of words along with reading fluency and comprehension. Just Words supports the Common Core State Standards with strategies for struggling readers and those who need additional work in mastering foundational skills in language structure.

Just Words is a sophicated study of word structure, which provides direct and explicit teaching of "how English works" for decoding and spelling automaticity. In class, students will be engaged in a variety of learning experiences designed to improve their study of word structure through the six syllable types in English with explicit teaching for both decoding and spelling.

They will learn to segment and blend sound within a syllable, sound -symbol relationships, high-frequency irregular words, and spelling rules or patterns of prefixes, roots, and suffixes. Finally, they will apply decoding skills to read passages with accuracy and expression. Students will also enhance their vocabulary development. Students will be provided new, exciting materials and will work at their own pace and will be provided multiple opporutnites to practice their skills. We are looking forward to an exciting year full of learning and achievement.
