What is the District Arts Festival?
The District Arts Festival is an annual event that showcases the visual and performing arts skill and talent of the students at Delaware Valley Regional High School and all five sending districts: Alexandria Township, Frenchtown, Holland Township, Kingwood Township, and our very own Milford Public School. Our Mustangs Band and Choir students in grades five through eight participate in the District Arts Festival Concerts each year. The program begins with a visual art show in the media center at 5pm, followed by a choral music concert in the auditorium at 6:30pm, and concluding with an instrumental music performance in the gym at 7:30pm.
The District Band Festival premiered in 1987 under the direction of Delaware Valley Regional High School Band Director, Jay Durner, and Frenchtown/Milford Band Director, Debbie Glick. The purpose was to create an opportunity for elementary and middle school students in the Delaware Valley Regional District to perform in a larger ensemble with full instrumentation and to provide an opportunity for band students from the participating sending schools to meet. The festival evolved to include showcase performances by each of the sending school and high school bands. The festival format changed to its current configuration with all of the students uniting together to perform as one large concert band. Each band director from the participating schools is given the honor to rehearse and conduct one of the songs.
Following the lead of the very successful District Band Festival, the choir directors from the high school and sending districts decided to create a similar experience for the elementary and middle school choir students. The District Choir Festival premiered in the Fall of 2009, with all choir students from the high school and sending districts singing together as one. Each choir director from the participating schools has the honor of conducting or accompanying the large choral ensemble. The District Choir Festival was later moved to March to coordinate with the District Band Festival and Music in Our Schools Month.
The month of March is designated as "Music in Our Schools Month" by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). The purpose of Music in Our Schools Month is to engage music educators, students, and communities in promoting the benefit of high quality music education programs in our schools. The District Band and Choir Festival Concerts are presented each year as part of this festivity.
