The students will be working every day to build up their reading stamina. This will be very hard work as they will be using their reading strategies at the same time they are working to add more "minutes" to their reading. The best way to practice this is by reading every day, not only in school but also at home with books the students choose and are a "Good Fit".

Students will be able to work on writing any kind of story they want. They will be using tools like stickers, and looking at funny pictures to create real or imaginary stories. Just like reading, the best way to become a better writer is by practicing writing every day.

Students will be able to help each other by partner reading. This allows more time to practice reading and social strategies, such as building fluency, checking for understanding, hearing themselves and their friends read, and learning to take turns.

Students will be able to work on their spelling words and other phonetic skills using playdoh, paint, sand, and other various manipulatives. This will help expand their vocabulary and promote correct spelling, which allows for more fluent reading and writing, thus speeding up the ability to comprehend what is read.

What's the teacher doing during Daily 5?

We will be using the CAFE strategies during Daily 5. (For more information, click on the CAFE link). While the students are in their centers and during Read to Self time during the day, I will be meeting with the students 1 on 1 or in Targeted Strategy Groups. We will discuss what strategies they are working on and how they are doing. Then we will decide whether or not to move on to another strategy or practice more with their current one.
